WordPress 2.5.1 Upgrade = Not Fun

May 12th, 2008 · 4 Comments

I’m really not sure what went wrong. I did the Dreamhost upgrade to WordPress 2.5.1 and it fried my entire blog. The database was fine (along with the config file pointing to it), but none of my posts were visible. I tried several things, including deleting the entire blog directory and re-installing to no avail.

In the end, I just restored my backup of the old blog. Maybe I will try the upgrade again in the future, but I have had enough “fun” this week. Maybe I will create a dev environment to experiment with future upgrades. Though this is just a small personal blog, this experience was very frustrating and annoying.

For anyone who has a blog, make absolutely sure that you keep backups of your blog, your database and maybe even export your blog posts. If I didn’t have backups, this would likely be my “first” post.

If anyone notices anything strange, please, please leave a comment. I’ll be playing around with themes for the next while until I find something I like.

I’ve done about 6 of these upgrades so far, including the one on my local machine. All went without a hitch. Here is what I did.

Make a copy of /wp-content (download to your desktop) and wp-config.php (just in case)
Make a backup of the database (using the wp database backup plugin)
    Upload the entire 2.5.1 install
Open your domain/wp-admin. You should get prompted to upgrade your database. Click the big link to do that
You’re done! Log in, upload your wp-content (if it go over written), and reactivate/update your plug-ins.

If you get database errors, re-upload your backed up wp-config.php and try again.

I’ve not done the upgrade with Fantastic yet, but for some reason I just don’t trust it. Give it a shot this way and you shouldn’t have any problems.

Thanks so much. I’ll try doing it that way on the weekend. I’ve never liked “wizards” anyway.

I am using Wordpress Automatic Upgrade. Wordpress Automatic Upgrade allows a user to automatically upgrade the wordpress installation to the latest one provided by wordpress.org using the 5 steps provided in the wordpress upgrade instructions.

If I am feeling adventurous when I wake up, I might give the upgrade another try. I feel much more comfortable now that I know exactly what needs to be backed up and restored if need be.
